A DEXA scan is a painless procedure and usually takes about 15 minutes. Unlike other scans, which can make you feel claustrophobic, DEXA scan is done in a fairly open environment and exposes you to minimal radiation. DEXA scan is also more effective in finding out areas of low bone mineral density than conventional X-rays. During DEXA scan, you will be made to lie down comfortably on an X-ray table and the scanner is slowly passed over your body. The scanner creates images, which your doctor (radiographer) will evaluate to measure the mineral content of your bones.
